Heart disease statistics for women (and African American women in particular) in the United States are STAGGERING!

Did you know?

• Every 60 seconds another woman dies from heart disease!
• More women die from heart disease than from all forms of cancer combined!
• The fatality rate for women diagnosed with breast cancer is 1 in 31; for heart disease it's 1 in 3!

A huge contributor to these statistics is the ability to recognize the symptoms of a heart attack (which presents differently than it does in men).  Then there's SEEKING HELP and not ignoring the signs!

Making an impact!National Wear Red Day, Feb. 7, 2014, marks the American Heart Association GO RED FOR WOMEN campaign's 11-year anniversary and much has been accomplished:

• 21 percent fewer women dying from heart disease
• 23 percent more women aware that it’s their No. 1 health threat
• Publishing of gender-specific results, established differences in symptoms and responses to medications, and women-specific guidelines for prevention and treatment
• Legislation to help end gender disparities

Despite the progress, however women are still dying because millions are still unaware of the risks and the facts. So now is not the time for complacency. It’s time to stand stronger, speak louder and join in the fight this National Wear Red Day.
